Chemoheterotrophic proteobacteria are parasitic. Some, including the enteric bacteria (like E. coli live on the intestinal tracts of animals. Many of these are facultative anaerobes, able to participate in aerobic or anaerobic respiration. Many are harmless but some, like Salmonella, are pathogenic.
