Procedure:
- Draw and diagram the organisms
- Write a descriptive paragraph on the Phylum Arthropoda
Description:
Phylum Arthropoda, also referred to as Anthropods, is the largest phylum in Kingdom Animalia. There are over 1 million classified species of Arthropods. Even more astonishing is the estimated 50 million unknown species that exist today. The three major classes of phylum Arthropoda include arachnida, crustacea, and insecta (largest class). All arthropods have segmented bodies, suggesting ancestry with annelids. Distinct body parts include the head, thorax (which is sometimes fused with the head), and abdomen. Arthropods have a hard outer shell, the exoskeleton, composed mostly of chitin. It is jointed, and has muscles attached to it. The exoskeleton provides protection for the organism and keeps them from drying out, but it also prevents arthropods from growing very big. The exoskeleton does not grow, and organisms must go through the process of molting, in which the old covering is shed, and a new and larger shell is grown.
