The 21st Century Biology Course

The 21st Century Biology class at Sidwell Friends School is a unique class that provides high school juniors and seniors with the opportunity to perform original research and shape their own experiments. Instead of a set curriculum with textbooks, lectures, tests and quizzes, we research, design, and perform our own scientific protocols. In addition, we have the privilege of working with scientists at the NIH. We also have the opportunity to meet and learn from experts in the fields we are studying before presenting our own research. Each class builds upon the experiments of the previous year. Students are currently working on five long-term projects:
  • Zebrafish comparative embryology
  • Thigmomorphogenic response in plants
  • A collaboration with the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research (NCMIR) to introduce telemicroscopy and tomography into the pre-college curriculum
  • A Bay Grasses in Classes program run through the Chesapeake Bay Foundation
  • Preparation for Brain Awareness Week (BAW)
