A Comparison of Sensory Systems

Sensory systems can be explored and compared both externally and internally, giving new meaning and significance to book diagrams.

Shown here is a comparison of vertebrate and invertebrate visual systems of squid (B and E)

and mackerel (A and D);

the external (C) and internal anatomy of the shark electrosensory system (the amplullae of Lorenzini) (G and H);

otoliths removed from the inner ear of salmon (F).

While performing this exercise, students can consider the different environmental condition under which these organisms live that have led to these special sensory adaptations.
