Part of the fun when we go on any trip is to learn about the plants and use them for cooking and other activities. This photo documents the making of sassafras tea during August, 1996 near Gettysburg, PA. Some of us really liked the tea others were disgusted! For advise on the vegetation in California we used two sources: Edible and Useful Plants of California by Charlotte Bringle Biggs (University of California Press, Berkeley, CA) and Wild Edible Plants by Ewell Gibbons.

Being natives of California, my husband and I have been plant stalkers for a long time. We have several favorite recipes like Toyon Berry Jelly, Hot Pepper Jelly, Blackberry Jam, Pies or Pancakes that have been developed and modified over the years. These foods are fun to make on a trip and are quite possible even in a campsite on a Coleman stove!
