Phylogeny

?       The weakly electric fish used in our experiments belong to the orders Gymnotiformes and Osteoglossiformes.

?       They evolved divergently from the Teleostei subdivision.

?       The Gymnotiformes order contains elongated eel-like fish.

?       They are found in South America and swim with stiff bodies and an undulating anal fin.

?       We used two Gymnotiform species in our experiments: Apteronotus albifrons and Eigenmannia virescens.

?       Fish from the Mormyridae family in the Osteoglossiformes order, found in West Africa, are distinguished by their elongated noses.

?       Their weak electric organs are found in the caudal peduncle.

?       We have used the Mormyriform Gnathonemus petersii in previous experiments.
