? 4 shielded cables
? phonograph cartridge
? preamplifier
? 1 BNC T-splitter
? 1 amplifier
? 1 T922 15 MHz dual beam oscilloscope
? Computer with Sound Forge 4.5 installed
Setup
1. Solder the phonograph cartridge (we purchased two at record player supply store, for about $12 each) to the shielded cable - which has one hot wire and one base wire
2. Connect the cable to the input jack of the preamp, ours is a small $35 guitar amp.
3. Connect the output jack of the preamp to the input of the amplifier
4. Connect the output of the amplifier to the T-splitter, which is attached to the oscilloscope.
5. Connect the other branch of the T-splitter to the computer audio input.
6. Computer: record and analyze sounds using Sound Forge 4.5
Procedure
1. Set up the equipment
2. Place a small plant in the terrarium that will act as the substrate
3. Rest the phonograph cartridge needle directly on the plant
4. Place the insect anywhere on the plant. Its vibrations are sent through the plant and picked up by the phonograph cartridge.
5. View the signal as a voltage versus time graph on the oscilloscope
6. Record and analyze the signals using the computer and the Sound Forge software
