Every summer Sidwell Friends conducts a comprehensive academic program designated to meet a number of needs: enrichment, acceleration, review, and strengthening of basic skills. Small classes, mostly taught by Sidwell Friends faculty, afford optimal opportunity to receive individual attention. Concentration on just a single course or two helps promote efficient learning. A relaxed atmosphere and air-conditioned classrooms help create a pleasant learning environment.

Credit Courses: A variety of credit courses are offered including different levels of Math, Science, and U.S. History. English courses are offered for students in Grades 9-10 as either credit (for non-Sidwell Friends students) or enrichment. Most students take the credit classes to accelerate their academic work, reduce course load for the coming year, or for review.

Enrichment Courses: A variety of enrichment and review courses are offered including a number of different courses in English as well as Math, Spanish, French, Keyboarding, SAT I Review. Middle Schools may combine one or two enrichment courses along with the ExploreStar program and select from a number of afternoon workshops for a full day of programming. Contact the Summer Programs Office for assistance in planning an enriching summer experience.

ADMISSIONS AND CREDIT
Approval for a credit course can only come from the school in which the student is regularly enrolled. The appropriate school officia's signature is required on the application form. In some cases, Sidwell Friends students may be given enrollment priority. A six-week credit course meets 3 1/2 hours daily and is considered to be a full year class.  Any absence longer than two days must be cleared with the Diretor of Summer Studies prior to the start of school. A student who misses more than two instructional days of school may not receive credit for the course.

All credit classes meet June 23-August 1st, 3 1/2 hours daily for six weeks. Each class is considered one credit, or one full year of coursework. Classes do not meet July 4th.

Note: Sidwell Friends Students who apply for credit courses: Submit applications to the Summer Programs Office after receiving the appropriate signature. Admission priority first goes to students who have extenuating circumstances. The remainder of the places on the course roster will be filled based on the order in which the applications were received. If enrollment in a given course reaches capacity, the Summer Programs Office will maintain a waiting list for the course.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
All students are expected to meet Sidwell Friends Schooll’s normal academic and personal standards.

Assignments. Individual teachers design their own courses and communicate clearly to students the work they are required to do outside the classroom. Although
assignments may vary with the nature and level of the course, a general rule is that a student will spend about an hour preparing for each hour of class time. Students are expected to complete assignments for courses even when they are absent from class. In cases of extended absences, because of illness, the student and teacher will make arrangements for the student to make up work in a reasonable amount of time.

Absences. If a student is absent unexpectedly, the school requests that parents call the Upper School Office (202-537-8160) by 8:30 am on the morning of the absence. If parents do not call, the School will place a call to determine why the student is not in class. Students will be permitted to make up work missed during excused absences.

Conduct. Students are expected to uphold the traditions of an academic community in which all members accept responsibility to do their own work and to give credit to sources that they use. They are expected to support the Sidwell Friends Honor Code which does not tolerate lying and cheating. All students are expected to abide by the rules and regulations outlined in the Sidwell Friends Handbook for Parents and Students, copy available upon request. Please note that food and beverages cannot be consumed in the school’s buildings.

Students are further expected to be in compliance at all times with generally accepted standards of behavior. Stealing, damaging, or destroying the property of any member of the school community, as well as the school itself, will not be tolerated. Students who are found to be responsible for such actions will be liable for the cost of repairing or replacing the items involved and will be subject to disciplinary action, which, at the discretion of the Director of Summer Studies, may include expulsion from the program. If expulsion occurs, tuition will not be refunded.

SFSnet Acceptable Use Policy Please click here for the SFSnet policy statement.  Each student and a parent/guardian must read and sign this policy and return it to the Summer Programs Office no later than June 1st.  Use of computers at Sidwell Friends School will be denied to any student who does not return the signed form.

REPORTS
A final report of work and achievement in all courses is sent to parents and, if applicable, to schools concerned. Mid-term reports are sent in courses that last six weeks. If non-Sidwell students would like their school to receive a report, they must indicate this on the application form and provide the full mailing address. The School reserves the right to cancel any course. Students affected will be notified immediately.
