Our youngest campers on the Wisconsin Avenue campus have a special program designed just for them! Junior Explorers is open to campers entering Pre-K through Grade 1. Small groups (home bases) of up to 15 campers are placed in a self-contained classroom with one lead teacher, one counselor, and many of the weeks one CAP. Home bases are created by age.
Each group participates in a variety of daily activities planned by the lead teacher including cooking, arts and crafts, games, story time, and water play. Make sure to bring your swimsuit each day!
Twice a week all Juniors assemble for a grand introduction to that week’s theme through storytelling, sing-alongs and other fun activities. They will welcome a guest show on campus such as Reptiles Alive, a magician, and interactive drama performances to help educate and enhance that week’s theme!
Friday mornings the Juniors are led in a special activity organized by the CAPs (Sidwell Summer’s Counselor Assistant Program) such as a dance party, Fourth of July parade, community service crafts, and treasure hunts!
Throughout the week, campers will rotate through special activities. With returning favorites:
- Mad Science™ will visit each week providing fun, age appropriate and interactive demonstrations in a variety of topics such as Bubbling Potions, Magnetic Attractions, and Worms!
- Artist Eliza Bright will lead each home base twice a week in hands-on art education activities focusing on different artists such as Matisse, Jackson Pollock, and Georgia O’Keeffe.
- Sidwell Summer’s Bethesda Day Camp’s veteran music teacher, JoAnn Taylor, will guide each home base once a week in a fun music and movement oriented class.
