Sidwell Summer is launching a new summer experience for the WHOLE FAMILY!  Join us throughout the summer for a variety of events and workshops designed to get the whole family active and engaged this summer.  These evening events will highlight:

  • Benefits of summer experiences!
  • Child development themes!
  • Great parenting ideas!
  • Fun for everyone!
 
When you seeSmile… Kid KAMP is available!
Kid KAMP allows parents to attend the event knowing the children are having a good time!

  • Activities for children ages 4-12
  • 6 – 8:30 p.m.
  • $10 per child
  • Space may be limited.

When you seeFamily Picture these are family events – so please sign up with your children!

May 29 – KAMPS Kick-Off! Smile
“Where Do the Children Play?” with guest, Joan Almon

“Where Do the Children Play?” is a PBS documentary, book, and outreach project about the vital importance of open-ended creative play for the healthy development of children.

Joan Almon is the Chair of the Alliance for Childhood.  Ms. Almon lives in College Park, Maryland and coordinates the work of the U.S. Alliance for Childhood, a partnership of educators, health professionals, parents and others seeking to rectify the decline in children’s overall health and well-being. She is a former Waldorf kindergarten teacher and has consulted with kindergartens in Africa, Asia, South America, Europe and other parts of the world. Restoring creative play to childhood is one of her passions.

Sports Fest mini camps and Round-Robin Soccer Tournament

Mini Sports Fest Camps
3:30 – 6:00 pm, $20/day or $50 for all 3 days
Clinics will be offered for the following sports: Soccer, basketball, tennis, floor hockey, and field
hockey. This is a great way to try the sports and the programs! Fun activities will also include the
Moon Bounce and sports related crafts. Bring a water bottle and wear comfy clothes!
6:00 – 8:00 pm 6/18 and 6/20 Families sign up for clinics together. Meet sports staff and play
with your kids! $15/day

Round-Robin Soccer Tournament
Open to recreational/house teams (no more than 2 travel players per team). Join us for a fun
play day – each team will get 2 50 minute games (6 v 6) and t-shirts for 10 players. Games will
be held on the hour from 3:30 – 6:30. Each night at 7:30 a ‘parent team’ will take the field – so
stay and enjoy some casual dinner and watch your parents play!
6/18 - U6/U7 teams Co-Ed (4 teams) and U8/U9 girls (4 teams) Parent: co-ed
6/19 - U8/U9 boys (4-8 teams) and U6/U7 Co-Ed (4 teams) Parent: moms!
6/20 - U9/U10 boys (4 teams) and U9/U10 girls (4 teams) Parent: co-ed
Entry fee is $100/team, if you sign up for more than one day, take $25 off. All proceeds go
toward the Sidwell Summer Sponsorship Fund. Parent Game - $50/team, 11 v 11.

Jenifer Lippincott presents, “7 Things Our Teenagers Won’t Tell Us (And How to Talk About Them Anyway)”

Jenifer Marshall Lippincott is the author of 7 THINGS YOUR TEENAGER WON’T TELL YOU (And How to Talk About Them Anyway) and has worked with adolescents as a high school English teacher, a dean at a boarding school and a learning consultant.  She has observed, counseled and researched teens extensively in a quest to understand their quirky, honest and unpredictable behaviors.  She has over twenty years experience in the learning field, providing counsel to schools in the areas of communications, diversity, strategic planning, and moral development.  She serves on the Pediatric Alliance for a Boston hospital, the Board of Trustees of a Boston area school and is a Fellow of the Society of Applied LearningClick Here for Full Bio

Martin LeBlanc presents, “Leave No Child Inside”

Martin LeBlanc is the National Youth Education Director for the Sierra Club, the largest and oldest conservation organization in the United States where he oversees the Sierra Club’s conservation and public education work, including advocacy around youth education issues.  A founding Board member of the Children and Nature Network, Martin is responsible for helping build youth leadership within the Leave No Child Inside Movement. Jennifer Voorhees presents “Anytime Anywhere Socializing – The Internet and Your Digital Native”

Jenni Swanson Voorhees coordinates Academic Technology at Sidwell Friends School. Ms. Voorhees is an internet safety expert and trained presenter for i-Safe America, and she has spoken to parents and students at many area schools. She also presented a workshop to educators on this topic at the 2006 ERB conference in New York City.

Join us as we explore the drive to socialize through a review of popular sites.  Internet safety expert, Jenni Swanson Voorhees, and her 11th grade daughter, Rose, will guide you and provide vital information with which you can then guide your children. Where it is safe to visit on the internet, what information is appropriate to post, the consequences of sharing too much information, and how to manage time spent online will all be covered.
