HISTORY OF ZARTMAN HOUSE

(taken from the SFS Calendar Notes for Sept., Oct. 2004)

Zartman House, Sidwell Friends Administrative office building, has undergone major renovations over the summer.  Geothermal heating has been added as well as central air conditioning.  The electrical and plumbing systems have been updated and new office configurations have been designed on all four floors.  The various departments have been consolidated with all of Development on the ground floor, Admissions and the Head of School?s office on the first floor, Business and Finance Offices on the second floor, and Human Resources, Calendar, and Auxiliary Offices on the third floor.

This fall construction will begin on the underground parking lot which will be situated under the soccer/field hockey field in front of the Upper School.

Coincidentally, we have been in touch with Pauline Rice, former Lower School teacher and wife of the late Peter Rice.  Pauline and Peter lived on the top floor of Zartman House with their children for many years.  What follows is an article Pauline wrote on the history of Zartman House, a fascinating account of the many famous people from history who were connected with it.  We have decided periodically to include personal memories from various historical periods or of specific events of note.  We welcome such accounts from any of you!
