When Thomas Sidwell founded
the School over a century ago, he believed that physical education and
athletics played an important part in the development of young men and
women. His beliefs have continued to be supported through the years.
Today, Sidwell Friends School offers a diverse athletic program at the
seventh and eighth grade level, as well as at the Upper School level.
During the fall and spring, most of our seventh and eighth graders participate
on teams with appropriate opportunities for competition with other area
schools. Team offerings during the winter cannot accommodate all, and
so the Department does offer limited opportunities in physical education.
The majority of students are offered interscholastic opportunities
as during the fall and spring. Our Upper School athletic program offers
a sport to any individual who desires that type of experience. Although
some teams do find it necessary to cut, there are teams during each season
that welcome any who are interested. In most sports there are opportunities
to learn the skills and develop the know-how at sub varsity levels.
Sidwell girls compete in the Independent School League, while the boys
participate in the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference. In addition to
the ISL and MAC sports, Sidwell Friends offers interscholastic
physical education opportunities
to a limited number of students in girls' winter soccer, boys' indoor
soccer, crew, squash and ultimate frisbee.
Note regarding preseason 2006-07 start times: Although
the academic calendar is starting one week late next year, the athletic schedule
will have to go by our league start dates and already scheduled contests
(cross-country invitational, early season play days and tournaments). Our
athletes must prepare for these competitions on the same schedule as our
competitive schools. The
pre-season start dates for the 2006-07 school year will be August 19th
for Football and August 21st for all other teams
except
golf and girls' tennis which will start August 28.
Thank
you for your support.
