Alumni News: Letter from Ginger Fay
Director of Alumni Relations
Dear Friends,
It is with very mixed emotions that I
write to share the news that I will be stepping down as Alumni Director at
the end of June. I am launching my own college counseling and consulting
business and look forward to this adventure as it will allow me to return
to something I love -- working with students -- as well as the opportunity
to spend more time with our one-year-old daughter, Charlotte.
The three years I have spent at SFS
have been the perfect combination of rewards and challenges and I have
learned more than I could have ever imagined about Quaker education,
fund-raising and alumni programming. You have been my best teachers and I
am grateful to have been able to work with such a remarkably talented
group of alumni. You truly let your lives speak. I am particularly
indebted to Cindy Meyer Truitt '73
and John Shakow '87
for their inspired and dynamic leadership of the Alumni Association.
Assistant Head of School Patricia King
Jackson has assembled a Search Committee to help identify my replacement
and we need your help. Please send your suggestions for candidates or
self-nominations to
gfay@sidwell.edu.
We would be especially pleased
for a member of the alumni body to serve in this important leadership role
at Sidwell Friends. The other Search Committee members are Dean of
Students Rebecca Zug, Assistant Director of Admissions Shelly Jeffery '68,
Annual Funds Director Leslie Hutchens and Alumni President John Shakow
'87. I serve as ex-officio to the committee and would be happy to field
your questions by phone and email. A detailed job description is
available
online.

Jerome
Nichols '00
Several weeks ago, Robynn
Scott-Clayton '00 contacted the Alumni Office with news about her
classmate, Jerome Nichols '00. Jerome has been playing in the NFL
Europe League for the Frankfurt Galaxy. Robynn wanted to encourage her
classmates and Sidwell friends to vote for Jerome, and help him make the All
NFL-Europe League Team at the Defensive Tackle Position. The Alumni Office
jumped into action and shared her message with the Classes of 1999-2003, as
well as the Athletic Department at SFS.
The good news came on Thursday,
May 25: Jerome made the NFL-Europe All League Team! The Frankfurt Galaxy
finished second during the regular season, so he and the team are playing in
the World Bowl. Then, Jerome will head to Wisconsin to start practicing with
the Green Bay Packers. In an recent email, Jerome wrote, "Please pass along
my gratitude to the rest of the Sidwell community. I'll be sure to keep you
posted throughout training camp." We wish him the very best!
Julie Silard
Kantor '87
Julie Silard Kantor '87
is executive director of The National Foundation for Teaching
Entrepreneurship, as well as the recipient of NFTE's 2005 Leadership Award
and a former NFTE Executive of the Year.
The National Foundation for
Teaching Entrepreneurship, or NFTE (pronounced "nifty"), is at the forefront
of teaching small-business start-up skills to at-risk youth, helping young
people from low-income communities to build life skills and unlock their
entrepreneurial creativity.
Julie has just come out with a
new book, I Said Yes! : Real Life Stories of Students, Teachers and
Leaders; Saying YES! To Youth Entrepreneurship in America's Schools.
I Said "Yes"! is Julie's
first-person account of the transformative power that NFTE's mission of
teaching entrepreneurship has brought to so many young lives--including her
own--over the past 14 years. It is both the story of Julie's path into youth
development and teaching, and of the many troubled youths who overcame
significant obstacles to make their lives productive and meaningful. To
