FAMILY MATH GAME OF THE WEEK: STRATEGY GAMES
There are many wonderful strategy games available now that kids love to play.
These games foster mathematical thinking by demanding logical and tactical
reasoning.
This week we would like to focus on a group of similar games, including Othello,
Pente, Go, and Connect Four. All of these games require players to try to get 3
or more of their pieces in a row. The opposing player tries to block them and in
Othello, Go, and Pente opponent’s players can also be captured.
Connect Four is perfect for the youngest students.
Othello, Go, and Pente can be enjoyed by both kids and adults alike. You can
learn how to play these games in minutes. Nevertheless, they are full of
incredible surprises, requiring complex strategic thinking and providing endless
challenge. The more you play, the more interesting these games become and the
more opportunities arise for creative problem solving.
Be prepared – you will play your hardest and your kids will still beat you!
Don’t have any of these games at home? Don’t worry! They are available at all of
the local toy stores and we also have some sets down in the Math Lab that we
would be happy to lend out.
