Read this information about lions, then see if you can answer the math puzzle.

Lions weigh about 400 pounds. They can be up to 7 feet long. They are able to jump a distance of more than 30 feet. Even though lions can jump into trees, they do not like to climb. Their roar can be heard more than 5 miles away. Male lions rest up to 18 hours a day.

Can you figure out how much farther a lion can jump than a human?

First, you need to decide what kind of jump you mean. A person can jump from standing still, or they can take a running leap. Which gets you farther? What kind of jump do you think a lion takes?

A lion takes a running leap to make its 30 ft. jump.

Here is a chart to help you estimate the difference between a human's jump and a lion's jump.

Average Distance Elementary Students Can Jump

Age Standing Long Jump Running Long Jump
7 49 inches 68 inches
8 50 inches 77 inches
9 53 inches 85 inches

How does this chart help you compare the running jump of someone your age to that of a lion's?
